D'oh!

So, the hubs and I have been talking about the Crossroads Guitar Festival for 2 years now.  We vowed that after missing it last year, we would be there FOR SURE this year.  Scottie is a bit of a bad a$$ on the guitar and after seeing Clapton live, we decided we must see him as often as possible.  Since we missed the show last year, my sister got us the DVD for Christmas and we really enjoyed watching from the really cheap seats!

We also decided it would be a great idea to go ahead and get our airline tickets to the Ft. Collins Brewer's festival, since my niece and her boyfriend just moved to the area and graciously offered us transportation and accommodations.  Who wouldn't jump all over that?  Especially since the company can't be beat, the scenery is incredible and New Belgium Brewing is part of the festival!  We've enjoyed many brews and bushwhackers with Jeff & Diana and were sad to see them move, but were glad they chose a desirable location to visit!  We are SO excited!

Well, I was searching for tix to Crossroads tonight- you know, trying to plan early and get our summer schedule figured out, when the scheduling gods dropped the bomb on me.  Yep, you guessed it.  Crossroads is the same weekend as the Ft Collins Brewers Festival.

SERIOUSLY??

Yeah, seriously.

So, it looks like we may be considering another festival this summer and we'll be putting the 2011 Crossroads DVD on our Christmas list.  Apparently June is a busy month for awesome activities.

On the Midnight Train to Georgia

The hubs and I just returned from a fantastic weekend in Atlanta.  We had tickets to see Old Crow Medicine Show and John Prine at the Fox Theatre.  We've been looking forward to this show for months!  We've seen both acts before, and even had tickets to see Old Crow Medicine Show on New Years Eve in Nashville, but I came down with a nasty bout of the flu and we had to give our tickets away.

If you've never seen a show at The Fox, you should check it out.  It's a beautifully decorated art deco building with excellent acoustics and a ceiling that mimics the nighttime sky- and I'm not talking about fiber-optic lights behind wood painted black.  I'm talking about a ceiling that makes you forget you are inside because of the different shades of blue and the clouds and the sunset simulation.  I guess it's like the Venetian in Vegas, but on a smaller scale.  Anyway, it's truly beautiful, and it seems a little funny that you don't smell outside smells when you take a deep breath.  Our seats were excellent- we were up in the balcony and could see and hear everything so clearly.  I give it an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up!

We arrived just in time for the show, but missed the first O.C.M.S. song due to a beer line that was the equivalent of Atlanta traffic at rush hour.  Fortunately, we only missed 1 song, though.  The band was on fire!  White hot fire!!!  Seriously, SO much energy.  Their songs are great, their playing is awesome and they really really rocked the house.  It was so hard to sit down during their playing.  O.C.M.S. is really a band you need to see where you are standing up, because they will make you want to wiggle.  Unfortunately, the folks in our section weren't the dancing type, so we decided not to rock the boat.  They played a great selection of fast songs that mentioned most of the confederate states, but when they played Wagon Wheel, the crowd went wild. If you get the chance, check 'em out live- you won't be disappointed.

John Prine came out and sounded as great as ever. I've always thought of John Prine as a songwriter in Bob Dylan vein, but with a country slant.  Maybe more like Kris Kristofferson??  He's more of a listening type show and less of a dancing type show.  I think my favorite of the night from him was Spanish Pipedream.

We had an awesome time at the show but by the time the show ended, we were ready for some post concert noshing!  Scottie and I saw an episode of Man versus Food not too long ago, that focused on restaurants in Atlanta, including Gladys Knight and Ron Winan's Chicken & Waffles.  Since this place was conveniently located between the Fox and our hotel, we decided to stop in.  Oh hell yeah!!  We got recommendations from some of the other folks there and went with the "Midnight Train".

Basically, it's fried chicken wings (no sauce) and a home made waffle.  We also got a side of squash casserole and mac & cheese.  It was my favorite meal of the weekend.  You can skip the mac & cheese, but everything else was excellent.  We also heard rumor that they serve a sweet potato cheesecake that is divine, but we were full and had 4 more blocks to go, so we decided we'll try that some other time.

A visit to Sweet Water Brewery was on the agenda for Saturday.  They host beer tasting events for 2 hours on Saturdays that are out of this world.  This is something we discovered on our last trip to Atlanta, and will likely be something we do every time we go.  For $8 a head, you get a pint glass and 6 tickets.  They don't actually sell beer there, due to distribution laws, so you buy the glass and get the tasting.  Every time they fill your glass, you give them a ticket.  It's big and clean, dog friendly, and sometimes they have bands there.  Their staff is very friendly and it's a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon!  The beer is excellent and they have their
standards like IPA and 420 regularly, but they mix it up with special batches as well.  It's so fresh and so tasty!  We were enjoying 70 degree weather and good fresh beer when 2 ladies approached us and handed over several of their tickets.  They had to leave early & liked Scottie's "Beeriodic Table" shirt, so they gave their tickets to us.

It was more beer than we could drink, and 1 of us had to be able to drive, so we saw a couple who were wearing Old Crow Medicine Show t-shirts from the show the night before.  We decided we'd share our good fortune with them.  We ended up hanging out with them the rest of the time, discovering that we have been to a lot of the same concerts and festivals & made fast friends. We actually ran into several people who were at the show the night before, so it was nice to be among "our people".

The trip was a blast- Scottie is the coolest guy I know and I love having adventures with him.  Our adventures continued with a free wine tasting at our hotel, a botched attempt to go to an oyster festival, a visit to Mary Mac's Tea Room for a soul food dinner and an eventful return trip to our hotel that included a verbal confrontation with a rude and aggressive pan handler.

This morning we took it easy.  We had a breakfast of creme brulee french toast on the terrace and just sat around soaking up the vitamin D.  We eventually got moving and had an easy drive back home dotted with newly blossoming daffodils and a really great Ray Charles station on Pandora.  Life is good!

To Roo or Not to Roo?

Almost every year in June, the hubs and I make our pilgrimage with all the long haired, bongo playin', incense burning, hula hooping hippies to the southern Mecca for jam rock a little farm in Manchester, Tennessee for 5 days of concerts, camping, dancing and a whole host of other shenanigans.  The Bonnaroo tribe consists of about 80,000 people and is not for the faint of heart.  It's a commitment.  A commitment to live communally in a field with no shade, no running water and only port-a-potties.  It's also a commitment to camp with people who may or may not bathe during their experience- did I mention it's in June in Tennessee?? It's a commitment to regularly apply sunblock, stand in lines to eat, bathe and go to the bathroom and it's a commitment to knowing you'll come home bone tired, but with some excellent memories!

the not-so urban sprawl

This has been a ritual for us for years.  Weeks of planning, epic trips to Costco for supplies, packing and repacking, checking off lists, last minute stops for batteries and gas, and let's not forget the ongoing search for decent canned beer.  It's an EVENT.  And for us, it has been THE  event for the bulk of our summers.  The hubs and I used to buy our tickets early- before the lineup even came out, as we could usually be sure that there would be enough bands there to suit our tastes.  As Bonnaroo has grown, the festival has attracted a more diverse musical line up and comedy acts.  This year's line up is no exception.

The first year I made the trek was 2003.  It was before I knew the hubster and none of my friends were interested, so I went by myself with a 2 man tent, a beach chair, toilet paper, a bag of granola and a jug of water.  Missed the memo about sunblock that year...  Anyway, I was hooked.  I stayed for 3 days, met a gazillion friends along the way and felt like I had found my tribe.  It reminded me of the very first Grateful Dead concert I had ever been to, only turned up to 11.

Since then, I have been almost every year and have enjoyed it just as much as the first time.  I think in 2004 I bought a hammock to take.  In 2006 I upgraded my tent and bought a cot the size of a twin bed.  Now, this is how we roll:

She's no beauty and she smells kinda funny, but she's got 2 beds and AIR CONDITIONING!!  Since most of the best shows go late into the night and it's too hot to sleep after 7 AM, the air conditioning is ESSENTIAL to the Roo experience. You can sleep until 1 or 2 PM (most good shows don't start until later than that), then get up, eat and dance the night away!

In 2009, we splurged and went VIP.  This allowed us the closest camp sites to Centeroo.  Centeroo is where the music happens (2 large stages, 2 large "tents" and a ton of smaller tents and stages).  Well, where the music you pay for happens, as nearly every  camp site has someone with a guitar or a djembe drum ready to engage you in conversation and a song.

The first year I went, I was in the very last row of the very last campsite- about a 2.5 mile walk each way to Centeroo.  SUCK.  If you've got the cash, VIP can be a somewhat swanky option.  The super secret entrance into Centeroo for VIP guests kept us out of lines and allowed us to smuggle in a few beers from our camp site.   But the real advantage to VIP happens before you even get there.  When our tickets came, we got super secret traffic directions to the venue that prevented our 60 mile drive from turning into 6 hours of this:

We also had flushing toilets, hot showers, a designated "not so crowded" seating area and access to a couple of air conditioned tents in Centeroo.  They also lay out a big spread for dinner on Thursday night with free beer.  This was awesome, since it poured down rain, and we sat in a tent drinking free beer and wondering what the sorry suckas stuck 2 miles from their campsites were doing!  The toilets were probably the clincher for me though.  Air conditioned bathrooms with running water to wash your hands and face are PURE LUXURY at Bonnaroo!  No trying to balance a flashlight to make sure you don't stand, touch or sit in something undesirable, no baby wipes needed to wipe everything down prior to doing your business and no huge lines (especially important when there's free beer).  Bathroom attendants keep everything clean and stocked.  The showers were a little funky- not sure they were all that better than a shower tent and a bucket of water that only you and your camp mates use, but still, it was nice.  BUT THE COST!!!  Oh dear lord, the cost.  It costs about triple the regular cost.  I find myself regularly wondering if it was worth it.  But it's hard to go back, once you've had the good stuff.  At least if you're a lady of leisure, like myself!

Last year we shocked everyone by skipping Bonnaroo.  We had big plans to attend the Crossroads Festival in Chicago and the Rothbury Festival in Michigan.  Plans fell through for Crossroads, and they canceled Rothbury.  Boooo.

This year we sit on the fence- do we Roo?  It is conveniently located and there are several great acts on this year's roster.  However, I think I prefer a smaller festival with mostly hippie bands and hippie crowds.  Hippies know how to live communally and generally like happy music over angry music and they wiggle instead of moshing. It's the familiar, and with 80,000 people living together for 5 days in a field, I think I prefer the familiar...  Am I aging????

All The Single Ladies

To all the single ladies out there, this one's for you.  Not only because I think this is the best Glee scene EVAR, and I laugh out loud every time I see it, but because my wonderful hubs shared an article with me last night  and I want to share it with you.  It was like an echo of my thoughts prior to meeting the hubs.  Maybe not all of you ladies have experienced the hang out zone, but if you have, be prepared for some "amen"s.  Enjoy~

I've got a confession...

If you read my first entry, you were probably aghast that I was still purchasing music that wasn't digital, had no flat screens in the house and hated texting.

I have EVOLVED!  I live in a world with flat screens, HD and Tivo, thanks to the hubs.  Here's the confession- I have never purchased a TV or any components (DVD players, VCRs, surround sound, DVR's, etc...) in my lifetime.

Yep, there it is.  GASP.

I was blind, but now I see.
He made a believer out of me.

I still hate texting though...

And We're Off... Slowly

Disclaimer:  Just published the post I wrote in August of 2008.  GEEEEEZZZZZZ!

I've had this blog for 2 years and this is my first post.  Although I've known for some time about my stellar procrastination skills, this has got to be the crowning achievement!  Twitter and Facebook have made me an avid "mini-blogger", but I've heard it said that a good craftsman doesn't blame his tools.

So here I sit on a Sunday night wondering what to share with the blogosphere... This is the equivalent to a first  "Hello World" application, so let's start with introductions...

Jumping In With Both Feet

Well, maybe I put my big toe in first... It all started with a smart phone. Let me explain.

For years I thought I enjoyed my online anonymity. I enjoyed lurking in the corners of cyberspace and feeding on the good, bad, ugly and sometimes ridiculous little seeds of humanity planted in the cloud. In some ways, I'm a late bloomer. I still buy CDs, didn't buy an iPod until 5th generation, hate texting, have regular cable and up until a few months ago, never surfed the web from my cell phone or used a blue tooth ear piece. My other guilty confession- there are no flat screen tvs anywhere in my house.

Then came the smart phone- that full QWERTY, email reading, MP3 playing, application downloading technological wonder reeled me in.  So here I am, blogging...
